I never knew I could eat so many sugary snacks. Some ambitious admissions officers have tried to mix in healthy snack choices (radishes or carrots) into their consumption, but the loud mouth-crunching tends to interrupt the rest of the committees ability to read without annoyance. A Rose for Emily Whats Important About the Title
A Rose for Emily is a short story by William Faulkner published in 1930. Set in Mississippi, the story takes place in a changing Old South and revolves around the curious history of Miss Emily, a mysterious figure. As a part of the title, the rose serves as an important symbol, and understanding the symbolism of the title is necessary for analyzing the text. Death The onset of the story reveals that Miss Emily has died and the whole town is at her funeral. Thus, going off the title, the rose must play a role in or symbolize aspects of Emilys life story.Ã Starting with the practical, the rose is probably a flower at Miss Emilys funeral. Thus, mentions of roses play a part in establishing a funeral setting. On the theme of death, Miss Emily is unwilling to let go of the dying antebellum period. Trapped as she is in that past, a ghostly remnant of her former self, she expects everything to stay the same.Ã Like the decaying Old South, Emily lives with decaying bodies. Instead of life, laughter, and happiness, she can only bear stagnation and emptiness. There are no voices, no conversations, and no hope. Love, Intimacy, and Heartbreak The rose is also generally viewed as a symbol of love. The flower is associated with Venus and Aphrodite, goddesses of beauty and romance, respectively, in classical mythology. Roses are often given for romantic occasions like weddings, dates, Valentines Day, and anniversaries. Thus, perhaps the rose can be related to Emilys love life or her desire for love.Ã However, the rose is also a prickly flower that can pierce the skin if youre not careful. Emily, like a thorny rose, keeps people at a distance. Her haughty demeanor and isolated lifestyle do not allow any other townspeople to get close to her. Also like a rose, she proves to be dangerous. The only person who does get significantly close to her, Homer, she murders. Emily sheds blood, the same color as the red petals of a rose.Ã The rose might also have been part of Miss Emilys bridal bouquet if Homer had married her. A certain fragility and tragedy characterize the realization that simple happiness and beauty might have been hers.

Biofuels: Are they the Future? Bio-fuels are also known as agro fuels. They are a renewable source of energy made from animal and vegetable material and a large portion of municipal solid and industrial waste. Bio-fuels are major sources of fuel from biomass. Biomass is any organic material stored in the tissues of living plants and animals. Plants generate their energy from the solar power using the chlorophyll in the leaves to create tissue from water in the ground and carbon dioxide in the air and animals take their energy from plants either by directly eating plants or by eating other animals that have eaten plants. Even though biofuels are sources of energy obtained from renewable resources, the positive effects to the environment are far outweighed by the negative effects to the environment from the production of these biofuels. In the Holt article; it is shown that Biblical explanation and interpretation assist the adult learner in gaining knowledge. The choices one makes gives real world perspective and power can only be obtained by the Holy Spirit. The article discusses the styles in which adult learning makes a difference, whether androgogy, transformative learning or self-directed learning (Holt). Adult Learning Theory for the Twenty-First Centuryâ⬠discusses the goals of educators to better prepare themselves to better deal with adult learners. Over the last 15 years, learning theories have changed very aggressively (Merriam, 2008). As adults continue to develop human physiology changes, thus learning teaching styles have to change to keep up. It has been recognized that with time everything that adults experience is part of the l earning process. It has been further recognized that educators have to increase their tool set to involve creative and artistic modes of teaching to reach a wider audience. Both articles cover the ever-changing dynamics of the human psyche and educational styles and requirements in dealing with adult learning. Educators have to continue to increase knowledge both for themselves as well as those whom they are educating. Where the styles of the teaching process in the Holt (2011) article differ from the Merriam (2008) article, they both recognize the changes in adult learners. It has been recognized over years and will continue for years to come that educators of adults will have to continue honing their skill sets to accommodate the learning styles of adults. Since adults learn differently from children it is important to include the learning styles necessary to maximize the efforts of educators. As adults learning styles change it will be necessary for those educating adults to change also. Reflection After reading both articles and realizing the application in my own life and learning style, I conclude that adults learn differently. There were moments of complete frustration as I was putting my thoughts together as I can tend to be somewhat of a perfectionist. I had the realization that time management and organizational skills are imperative when completing an assignment of any type. The Holt (2011) article caught my attention initially because of how I tend to study and read the Bible in particular. I am coming to understand more and more how I learn and further realize that the concepts of knowledge, choice and power are applicable in my own life. I am intrigued by the concept mentioned in the Holt article and will consider its application to my current Bible study methods. The Merriam (2008) article is interesting in the fact that I had no idea how challenging it is for educators to keep up with the learning curve that is necessary to continue teaching the increasing number of adult learners. Being out of the college environment for so long, I realize it is not as easy to just get things done with all of the demands of life as I know it. I can see how both articles and their teaching styles have a positive impact on dealing with adult learning. With all of the influences of culture, music, art, etc, it is imperative that educators find a way to keep up with the demands of educating the population of adults returning to increase their knowledge to keep up with fast paced American culture. I now have a new respect for teachers on all levels. It is interesting that adult educatorââ¬â¢s find is so necessary to effectively reach adults. It is increasingly more common for adults to return to school for a number of reasons, and are driven to succeed for just as many reasons. The Novel Hard Times Essay Dear colleges, to sum up Mr Blackpool in two words with all seriousness, is to say that he is a tragedy and a born loser. From the many experiences Stephen Blackpool undergoes, I only make mention of the following: he is stuck in an unfortunate marriage, he is a failure at work, he is bad judge and he dies after falling into a mine.Ã Dickens introduces Blackpool into the novel in the tenth chapter. He is one of those thousands of workers living in Coketown. Though only forty years old he is, as Dickens says, already an old man. He is seen outside waiting outside the works for his friend, Rachael, he likes to walk her home despite the gossiping neighbors, after which he makes his way to his lodgings. When he arrives there, he is surprised by the presence of his wife a disabled, drunken creature who constantly leaves him and is unfaithful to him. In addition Dickens uses few other techniques pertaining to the language aspects. He offers Blackpool a dialect, which is filled with elongated vowel sounds e.g. Nay instead of No, doon, among, droonken. It definitely can be said that the oo morpheme does create distinctiveness to his speech from all the other characters in the novel. The fact that Blackpools language is written phonetically, gives words more depth, and in some respects highlights his social class in the Victorian society i.e. a worker. His vocabulary is down to earth and can be described as god-fearing e.g. God forbid. This might be Dickens attempt to suggest that Blackpool is an honest and religious person.Ã In the next chapter, which is eleven, Stephen seeks an interview with Bounderby, his employer, to ask advice on the question of marriage and divorce. Bounderby makes it clear to Blackpool that there is, as the chapter heading suggest no way out of his situation. The plot further thickens for Stephen at a union meeting; he is disciplined for refusing to agree to the negotiating terms formulated by the United Aggregate Tribunal. Here Dickens emphasizes the ranting oratory of Slakbridge, the union representative, and contrasts it with the submissive, humble pleas of Stephen to be allowed to work despite his inability to agree with the policy. But His workmates refuse to work with him, and he cannot bring himself to seek solace from Rachael. Once again Blackpools role as martyr is illustrated here, i.e. a victim at work and this cries out for sympathy from the reader. Stephen has another meeting but unlike last one, which was between Men and brothers this time it is between Men and masters. As at their last meeting, Stephen again finds Bounderby eating. He is now in the company of his wife, Louisa, and her brother Tom and Hearthouse. Bounderby demands that Blackpool tell them of his dealings with the union or Combination as he calls it. Blackpool is not bullied into volunteering opinions about the union; on the contrary, he firmly defends the sincerity of most of its members. Stephen does not, in fact, address his remarks to Bounderby but to Louisa, in whose face he seems to find some sympathy.Ã This link between Louisa from one strand of the story and Stephen from another is what we call, my dear colleagues a plotting device. For it is through that link that Tom can become connected with Blackpool and thus carry his own plans forward!Ã During this meeting, Bounderby asks him to explain what the workers have to complain about. Stephen points out that there seems no purpose in their lives. They are born to work in terrible conditions, and then just to die. They are not encouraged to have any hopes or aspirations. In anger, Bounderby says he will crush any threat of rebellion by transporting Slackbridge and his kind as convicts. Blackpool replies that this kind of action will not solve the underlying problems. He insists that both parties must be prepared to meet, to compromise and thus reach agreement. They must not maintain their extreme, opposing positions. For this speech, Stephen is sacked on the spot.

Growing Suburbia is an excellent historical analysis book about suburbs in America. Dolores Hayden, author and a professor at Yale, clearly demonstrates the origin of the suburb and emphasizes the role of the federal government played in building suburbia in America. Examples Hayden uses in the book include policies to subsidizing suburbia by massively funding highways or providing many generous tax benefits to homeowners. Upon reading various chapters, Hayden gives me the impression that she is not very happy about the overly developments and the increasing social crime rates in the urban region. However, Hayden still holds an optimist mind that many issues concerning various urban experiences will improve over time. It is not surprise to find plenty of women and ethnic issues in the book. Basic Guide to Using Spanish Adverbs Like adjectives, adverbs are words that often are used to provide needed details in speech and writing. Although we could make grammatically complete sentences without them, we would be severely limited in what we could convey. Spanish adverbs are much like their English counterparts. There are at least two ways in which you can define what adverbs are: Words that tell us when, how or where the action or process in a sentence takes place.Words that modify or limit the meaning of a verb, adjective, adverb or entire sentence. A look at the examples below should make clear what types of words were talking about. As in English, most adverbs are derived from adjectives. In Spanish, most adverbs that are derived from adjectives end in -mente, just as in English most end in -ly. Following are the most common types of adverbs. Spanish Adverbs Examples Adverbs of manner: Adverbs of manner are the most common and are used in a wide variety of situations, as they tell how something is done. In Spanish, they typically come after the verbs they modify. Estudia bien. (She studies well.)Canta mal. (He sings poorly.)Conduce lentamente. (He drives slowly.)Me abrazà ³ carià ±osamente. (She affectionately hugged me.)Leo mucho. (I read a lot.) Intensifiers and modifiers: These serve to make the adverb or adjective they modify either more or less intense.
